ObjectiveConservation and revival of water sources (rivers, ponds, wells, stepwells), promotion of public participation, and enhancement of natural resources.
Key Components- Purification of dirty water drains under Swachh Bharat Mission-2.0 - Public participation, especially women - Events on Ganga Dussehra (5th June) and Bat Savitri Purnima - Creation of green belts around water structures - Soil from excavation given to farmers
Implementation Guidelines- Treatment of dirty water drains - Provision of drinking water facilities - Rain-water harvesting systems - Repairing water leakage - Preparation of Jaldoot, Jal Mitra, and Amrit Mitra
Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM)- Launched on 2 October 2014 (Gandhi Jayanti) - Aims to create a clean India by covering rural and urban areas.
SBM-Urban (Step 1)- Elimination of open defecation - Construction of 2.5 lakh community toilets and 2.6 lakh public toilets - Solid waste management facilities in every city
SBM-Urban (Step 2)- Making cities 'garbage free' - Grey water management - Conversion of urban local bodies to ODF+ and ODF++ - Focus on solid waste segregation, 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle), and scientific processing of waste
Funding (SBM-Urban)- Central Government provides up to 40% Viability Gap Funding (VGF) for community toilets - Additional 13.33% by States/UTs - North-eastern and special category states contribute only 4%
Estimated Cost (SBM-Urban)Rs 65,000 per seat of a community toilet Total outlay for SBM-U 2.0 (2021-22 to 2025-26): Rs 1.41 lakh crore
