SignificanceCommemorates Buddha's descent from Tāvatiṃsa-devaloka (Heaven of Thirty-Three Gods) to Sankisa Basantapur (Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh) after preaching Abhidhamma to his mother Mahamaya and disciple Arahant Sariputta.

TimingCoincides with the end of Vassa (three-month rainy retreat) and Pavāraṇā festival (full moon day of the 11th lunar month, usually October).

Pali Language StatusDeclared a Classical Language by the Government of India due to its role in Theravada scriptures.
